Hey there, Tech Fizz here.

Some quick updates:

1/ The weekly newsletter will now be sent out on Sundays instead of Saturdays.

2/ Effective next Sunday (August 31), the newsletter format will be different. Without giving away too much, the content will focus more on tactical ways to invest smarter.

Here's what we have in this week's edition:

  • The economy seems to be doing okay...but we won't know for sure until the Fed makes its interest rate decision.
  • Google increases its stake in a bitcoin mining infrastructure company.
  • Are we in an AI bubble?

Earnings

  • Palo Alto Networks ($PANW)
    • Beat revenue expectations by 1.4%
    • Beat EPS expectations by 6.7%
  • Analog Devices ($ADI)
    • Beat revenue expectations by 4.5%
    • Beat EPS expectations by 6%

Economic Reports

πŸ’Ό New unemployment claims and total ongoing claims rise. Steady initial claims confirm that layoff activity remains low, but rising continued claims confirm hiring activity is weakening. This combination reflects a deteriorating labor market.

Market Impact: β†˜οΈ Bearish

🏠 Homebuilder sentiment remains in the dumps. Buyers are waiting for mortgage rates to drop due to affordability challenges and builders are grappling with regulatory policies connected to developing land and building homes.

Market Impact: β†˜οΈ Bearish

πŸ“ˆ Activity survey signals economic growth, but also inflation. Companies across both manufacturing and services are reporting stronger demand conditions but have passed tariff-related cost increases through to customers in increasing numbers, causing significant inflation pressures.

Market Impact: ↗️ Bullish

πŸ“’ Stock in the Headlines: Terawulf ($WULF)

Reason for attention: Google’s stake in the company increased to 14% from 8%.

Profile: Bitcoin mining infrastructure company. IPO'd in April 2022. Market cap of $3.59B. Last closed at $9.16/share.

  • Strengths:
    • Strong revenue growth YoY
    • Google funding
    • Upward stock momentum post-earnings

  • Weaknesses:
    • Not profitable
    • Weakening margins

The Verdict: Positive momentum. Transformative growth trajectory via Google backing. Company is nearing inflection point. Great opportunity to enter if you have healthy risk appetite.

⛰️ Tech Terrain

Based on this MIT study, we might be in an AI Bubble 🫧

  • TL;DR: 95% of companies are seeing zero returns from their generative AI investments.

  • The implication: Confidence in AI initiatives is already declining among corporate leaders. Companies are spending billions and are essentially getting nothing in return. If this trend continues, there is a good chance that all the hype and euphoria around AI will vanish, along with all the funding. In other words, we might already be nearing the top. Invest accordingly.
