๐ŸŒŠ October layoffs surge to 22-year high. Employers announced 153,000 job cuts last month, and total layoffs for 2025 have now exceeded 1 million.

๐Ÿšจ Popular stock valuation method is flashing red. The Shiller Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio has recently surpassed 40 for only the second time in history.

AI PROMPTS

๐Ÿ“‘ A research paper titled "Verbalized Sampling: How to Mitigate Mode Collapse and Unlock LLM Diversity" was recently published by Stanford, Northeastern, and West Virginia University.

Without going into too much detail, the paper essentially introduces the concept of Verbalized Sampling and how it can be used to generate multiple diverse responses to a single prompt.

According to the researchers, this prompt engineering technique "unlocks" the AI model's full range of potential answers by:

  • mitigating mode collapse (when the model produces a limited, repetitive set of outputs instead of a diverse range of possibilities)
  • improving diversity and creativity without requiring model retraining.

๐Ÿ’ก The takeaway: Instead of getting a single, often generic answer, you can get a distribution of options that reveal how the model "thinks".

๐Ÿ‘‡ Let's see this prompt framework in action ๐Ÿ‘‡

โš™๏ธ Verbalized Sampling Prompt Method:

#CONTEXT:

โ€‹
#GOAL:

Act as an experienced financial advisor. My goal is to hedge against economic uncertainty.

#TASK:

Advise on how I should re-balance my portfolio or what alternative assets I should acquire during a prolonged government shutdown, deteriorating labor market, and unaffordable housing market.

๐Ÿ“ค Sample Output:

Response #1:

During periods of economic uncertainty like a prolonged government shutdown and weakening labor market, consider increasing your allocation to **short-duration Treasury bonds** and **TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities)**. These provide safety, liquidity, and inflation hedging. Reduce exposure to cyclical equities and high-yield debt which may underperform.

Response #2:

Rebalance your portfolio to include **precious metals**, especially **gold and silver ETFs**, which historically act as safe havens during political and fiscal instability. They're particularly useful when confidence in government functioning erodes.

Response #3:

Consider allocating 5-10% of your portfolio to **real assets** like **farmland REITs** or **infrastructure funds**. These provide income and inflation protection while being less correlated to traditional equity markets, which is important when the housing market is unaffordable and under stress.

Response #4:

Reduce overexposure to real estate and mortgage-backed assets. In an unaffordable housing market, these instruments can underperform. Replace with **defensive sector stocks** like healthcare, utilities, and consumer staples which maintain earnings even in downturns.

Response #5:

Add exposure to **global macro hedge funds** or **multi-strategy funds** that thrive on volatility and policy-driven dislocations. These can dynamically adjust exposures and protect capital when traditional assets are under pressure due to U.S. fiscal gridlock or labor shocks.
